Santiago - Cape Verde Holidays
In Santiago the black and white ingredients of Cape Verde's past are at their most vivid. On the southern shore is the old capital of Cape Verde - Ribeira Grande - the first European city in the tropics. However, up in the mountains the people are as African as Cape Verdeans can be - their ancestors were escaped slaves from Ribeira. Santiago is the largest island in Cape Verde with 2 mountain ranges the Serra do Pico do Antonio and the Serra da Malagueta. There are lush valleys in the centre and several permanent water sources. The volcanic rocks on Santiago are 4-5 million years old while the rocks from the sea floor are older!
There are some reasonble surfing spots in Santiago, with the swell best between January and March. For fishing, you can link up with the local fishermen in almost any village and for a small payment they will take you out on one of their trips.
The interior of Santiago is filled with spectacular craggy mountains,
ribeiras and plantations. Although it does not have the drama of Santo Antao, or the strangeness of Fogo, it has walks that are both beautiful and rewarding.
Praia is now the capital of the island and although African, has a Mediterranean feel as well.
