Santo Antao - Cape Verde Holidays
There is one overwhelming attraction on Santo Antao: hiking the
ribeiras. Non-hikers can also appreciate the landscape from the spectacular drives over the ridges and along the ribeira floors. The road from Porto Novo to Ribeira Grande is one of the highlights of a visit to Cape Verde! However, there are virtually no sandy beaches and there are no watersports. You will need to reach the island by ferry from Sao Vicente [50 minutes] as there is no airport.
Santo Antao is the second largest of the Cape Verde Islands and probably one of the greenest with deep valleys and ravines and agriculture ranging from wild strawberries to plantations of tropical and temperate fruit and vegetables. Village life is very simple and you can still find thatched houses.
The main town - Porto Novo - was inaugurated as a city in 2005 and is full of smart new buildings paid for by Luxembourg as well as tended gardens and promenades overlooking the channel. Ponta do Sol is one of the oldest Barlavento settlements - a town built on a breezy peninsula and is becoming increasingly popular with tourists. Tarrafal is an isolated spot on the west coast and is frequented more by "yachties" than any other visitors due to access being so hard. There are some walks from the village, and the black-sand beach is supposed to have medicinal properties.
