Sao Vicente - Cape Verde Holidays

For many people Mindelo - the capital - is Sao Vicente. It's a fine city, full of life. The wide streets, cobbled squares and 19th century European architecture all contribute to the sense of colonial history in Mindelo. Most facilities lie not on the coastal road but on the next road back.

Sao Vicente is on the world's greatest windsurfng and body-boarding destinations but the market for renting equipment has not yet developed fully. Surfers love some of the Sao Vicente beaches and, in 1997, Sandy Beach at Calhau was included in the European professional circuit. But is is among windsurfers, who have reached bullet-like speeds here, that it has become famous.

For nightlife, Mindelo has plenty of live music and most restaurants have a Cape Verdean night. During the full moon in August people descent on Baia das Gatas for weekend of music, dancing, eating and general revelry. The festival began as the best of them do - just a few musicians gathering for all-night jamming sessions. Now bands come from all over Cape Verde and from abroad and there is horse racing and watersports.
