Guangzhou
... is the capital of Guangdong Province, and is alternatively known as Canton, and is the economic centre of the Pearl River Delta, one of mainland China's leading commercial and manafacturing regions. It is the birthplace of the Chinese revolutionary Sun Yat-Sen, the first president of the Republic of China, and has been continuously occupied since the third century BC.
Guangzhou has a lovely climate all-year round with almost no winter: the city is always green with flowers in bloom, hence reputed as the "flower city". One of the city's best-loved attractions is the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees [the Liurong Temple], named after a famous poem written here by Su Shi. The temple is 6th century, while the octagonal Flower Pagoda [Hua Ta] is 17 storeys high and dates back to the 3rd century.
Shamian Island is the site of many colonial era buildings, including the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. Another church is the Shishi Sacred Heart Church.
The Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall on Yuexiu Hill is dedicated to this local hero and is set within a pretty park. The ancestral Chen Clan Temple dates from the 19th century and is filled with statues and ivory carvings commemorating members of this wealthy family.
The city has a lrage number of good museums, including the City Art Museum [calligraphy, Tibetan Buddist art, traditional Chinese painting and sculpture], Guangzhou Sculpture Park, Nanyue Royal Tomb Museum, Guangdong Museum of Art [contemporary, particularly local works], Guangzhou Uprising Museum, Guangdong Revolutions History Museum, President Sun Yat-Sen Museum and the Peasant Movement Institute.
Trying Yue Cai [Cantonese Cuisine], one of the eight Chinese famous cuisines, is definitely a must in Guangzhou. Another must is a walk along the riverside in the several lovely parks.
