ALICANTE TRAVEL GUIDE
Costa Blanca, Spain

If you are looking for a holiday hotel or apartment in Alicante, the following information may help by giving you an overview on the resort.

Alicante, the principal city of the Costa Blanca, is a port and seaside resort built around a natural harbour. Curving round a bay and dominated by the ruins of its ancient castle, the city of Alicante, despite its thousands of foreign tourists, remains truly Spanish. For anyone on holiday in the region, Alicante is a must and is a good contrast to days on the beach.

A bustling city with interesting buildings, churches and museums, fantastic restaurants, and an abundance of shops and markets; including the Mercado Central, one of the regions largest daily food markets and general tourist facilities. The main shopping area runs along the Avenida de Maisonnave and the streets around Avenida de Francisco Soto, leading down to the Paseo de la Explanada de Espaņa, a palm-lined promenade along the waterfront. Behind the Explanada lies the port and marina, an area with many terraced bars and cafes.

The Greeks established the first settlement; a colony near modern Alicante called Akra Leuka or the white headland. The Romans followed, founding their city of Lucentum, the City of Light. During the 8th century, like most of Southern Spain, Alicante was invaded by the Moors and for almost 500 years was an Arab city. This was until 1246 when Alfonso X regained the city for the Castilian Crown. Jaime III incorporated Alicante into the kingdom of Valencia and is today the second largest city in Valencia and is the fourth wealthiest province in Spain.

This stylish city has much to offer both residents and its visitors. Its prosperity is based on traditional and modern industry, agriculture and tourism. The year-round mildness of the climate, sandy beaches and quality hotels are added attractions, which lure many visitors.
