Altea is a charming village set on a small hill, approximately 30 minutes drive from
Alicante and approximately 10 minutes drive from
Benidorm. Altea, from the Moorish name
‘Althaya’ meaning
‘health to all’, is an original a fishing village restored in the 1950s by a colony of artists, who together with a variety of craftsmen, painters and potters are still among the village’s inhabitants.
Altea is a mixture of white washed buildings and quaint narrow streets, all built around the prominent, blue domed church of La Virgen de La Consuelo, which sits at the highest point of this picturesque old village. The sloping, flower filled cobbled streets are lined with inviting boutiques selling handmade gifts, jewellery and pottery. The many small art galleries reflect that Altea was a haven for artists, writers and musicians they gave Altea a rather bohemian feel.
Altea has over 5kms of pebble and shingle beaches, divided into sections, backed by a pleasant palm-lined esplanade with a variety of restaurants to enjoy. The promenade is also hope to a huge Tuesday market, one of the biggest of its kind on the Costa Blanca, and offers great water sports during the summer months.
Altea is ideal for the more discerning tourist who will be captivated by its medieval cobbled streets, its old quarter and the delights of its palm-lined seafront esplanade. Altea is not for those who prefer a resort that offers nightclubs; English type pubs or restaurants as it has retained its Spanish character and charm of yesteryear; it is perfect for those who want to escape mass tourism.
