CALPE TRAVEL GUIDE
Costa Blanca, Spain

If you are looking for a holiday hotel or apartment in Calpe, the following information may help by giving you an overview on the resort.

Calpe is a family resort located halfway between Benidorm and Javea. Like most of it’s sister resorts, Calpe’s economy is based on fishing and tourism. One of the main attractions in Calpe is the blue flag beach with golden sand and crystal clear waters. The well-known, dramatic outcrop of Penon de Ifach dominates the resort itself, an enormous Gibraltar like rock, which separates the two main beach areas of Playa la Fossa and Playa Cantal Roig.

A large number of restaurants along Playa la Fossa are more geared towards Spanish tourists, with local cuisine and fish dishes. However, there is a small selection of British establishments throughout the resort. The pedestrianised promenade of Paseo Infanta Cristina is the full length of the beach and features a number of cocktail bars that help generate a lively nightlife scene.

On the other side of Penon de Ifach is a sophisticated marina, followed by a rocky beach called Playa Cantal Roig. The promenade of Paseo Infanta Elena starts from this point and runs past the Roman fish farm and Roman baths, all the way past another blue flag beach called Playa Arenal-Bol. At the end of this beach you are pretty much in the old town of Calpe.

The old town of Calpe is worth a visit, simply to wander around and take in some of the historical squares and buildings. The town is home to a weekly street market every Saturday and a flea market every Wednesday, as well as being host to local craft fairs during the summer months. Another worthwhile visit is the weekday afternoon fish auctions at the port of La Lonja. The salt flats just inland from Playa la Fossa or Playa Levante as it is also known, provide a haven for migrating birds and is an ideal spot for keen birdwatchers.
