DENIA TRAVEL GUIDE
Costa Blanca, SpainIf you are looking for a holiday hotel or apartment in Denia, the following information may help by giving you an overview on the resort.
Denia lies approximately 7 kilometres from Javea, beneath the Montgó natural park and was founded by a Greek colony. It was named in honour of the Roman goddess Diana; to this day the inhabitants of Denia are still known as dianenses and a temple in her honour was excavated here. Throughout the 19th century, English raisin-dealers lived here and produced more than three quarters of the raisins imported to the United States and Britain. The town’s broad streets and solid buildings date from this period with the small Museo Etnológico displaying information on the town’s early history.
Denia is now a fishing port and holiday resort with a fascinating old town, superb restaurants and magnificent beaches that stretch for many kilometres, although you will probably need a car to visit most of them. Apartments complexes are the main form of tourist accommodation in Denia, although there are some quality hotel complexes in the resort. Attractions include the 16th century Castillo de Denia perched high above the town and houses a small archaeological museum (Museo Arqueológico), the lovely 18th century Church of Assumption and a beautiful old quarter near the fishing port.
It is from the port that daily ferries cross over to Ibiza and Mallorca (on a clear day you will be able to see Ibiza) and a narrow-gauge train service which runs south down the coast to
Alicante. By car is probably the best way to see the lovely coastline and beaches, which consistently are awarded blue flags for cleanliness and safety.
Denia is a thriving commercial centre and boasts modern supermarkets, top quality shops and an abundance of restaurants, which offer some of the best regional and international cuisine on the Costa Blanca: including some great tapas bars and seafood restaurants as well as Indonesian, Mexican, Italian and Greek restaurants.
