Guardamar del Segura is a lovely oasis of sand dunes, forests and beaches. A thriving town and summer resort perfect for families and couples, situated at the mouth of the Segura River. Now surrounded two large natural saltwater lakes, which form the ‘Salinas de Guardamar’ and are officially a Spanish Nature Reserve, which attract a wide variety of bird life.
Inhabited first by the Iberians, then occupied by the Romans before becoming a major Moorish religious centre known as ‘Rábita Califal’. During the 13th century the Christians ousted the Moors who built a castle and church and developed Guardamar into a fishing and agricultural centre. In 1829 an earthquake destroyed the village and it was later rebuilt further away from the river.
Guardamar del Segura is a developing tourist centre, and although not as commercialised as the other Costa Blanca resorts to the north of
Alicante, retains that special Spanish feel which others seem to have lost. Visitors to the area will find a wide range of water sports in the marina of Guardamar del Segura, jet skiing, scuba diving, sailing, windsurfing and more are all available at the mouth of the river. The harbour itself is home to nearly 500 moorings.
The sandy beaches of Guardamar del Segura are perhaps some of the cleanest and best cared for in Spain, with 15kms of beach; popular not only for recreation but also for sand artistry, it’s an ideal place to relax, even during the busiest times of the year. There are many fine restaurants, which specialise in excellent fresh seafood, rice and prawn dishes.
