Playa San Juan is located 8kms north of the capital, San Juan de Alicante and combines agricultural tradition with an active tourist industry. Mainly known for its vast, open beach that has been awarded the Blue Flag of the European Union (the highest accolade a beach can be awarded) and is also known as San Juan Beach or Platja de San Joan.
There are many facilities available on the beach including volleyball nets, pedal boat hire, parking, children’s playground, lifeguards, beach bars
(chiringuitos) and promenade that is lined with dozens of restaurants allowing beach goers to not only spend the day on the blue flag Playa San Juan but also enjoy typical cuisine of the Costa Blanca. The beach is also well catered for the handicapped visitor.
San Juan Pueblo is the historic quarter of San Juan and features several monuments including a 17th century parish church, a number of monasteries or hermitages, an 18th century Calvario, the 16th century Santa Ana and San Roque. Very close to San Juan is the Monastery of Santa Faz where it is said that a piece of cloth which was used to wipe the face of Jesus exists! On the second Thursday following Holy Week, this is the traditional site of an annual pilgrimage. The town of San Juan celebrates its local holiday and honours Santo Cristo de la Paz (12th to the 16th September) and also the famous Bonfires of San Juan (19th to the 24th of June) a merged festival of the ancient pagan celebration of the summer solstice and the Christian fest of San Juan.
