BENALMADENA HOLIDAYS and BENALMADENA HOTELS
If you are planning your holidays to Benalmadena and are looking at hotels in Benalmadena, the following information may help by giving you an overview of this popular resort in the Costa del Sol, Spain.
Somewhat tamer than its neighbour [
Torremolinos], Benalmadena is made up of three different areas. The main tourist centre is the Cosmopolitan
Benalmadena Costa, which is focused around three main entertainment areas – 24-Hr Square, Bonanza Square and the Marina, all offering endless things to see and do all day long. The large Marina handles over 1,000 yachts and boats of all types. From the Puerto Deportivo you can take a boat cruise to
Fuengirola and even enjoy some dolphin-spotting.
For something different to do on your holiday in Benalmadena, why not take a ride in a cable car [open from 10:30-late from April to October] which can be found on the Esplanade Tivoli. This will transport you up into the hills from where you can walk down two marked pathways. Once at the top, you will find some organised activities. You can ride a donkey, watch birds-of-prey exhibitions and horse-riding displays or ramble along the walking trails.
Another big hit in Benalmadena Costa is the well-organised SeaLife found at Puerto Deportivo [the marina]. Here you will be able to play minigolf, take part in organised games and feeding sharks. There is also the recently added Amazon section and a display of sea snakes. Another aquarium is at Selwo Marina in Parque de la Paloma. It has a dolphinarium and ice-penguinarium, an Amazonian aviary and the option to swim with sealions.
Benalmadena Pueblo is the old part of the town, which sits further inland, tucked into the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas. It is the original Andalucian White Village, still full of rural charisma, and offers a completely different contrast to the hectic, busy pace of the coastal strip, with its narrow streets, winding alleyways and terracotta-tiled roofs sitting on top of white-painted houses with geranium-filled balconies. In the main square, Plaza de Espana, there is a statue, which has become the symbol of Benalmadena - a young girl offering water in an upturned shell.
Half way between the coastline and the Old Town lies the third area, the main residential area,
Arroyo de la Miel [which means “Stream of Honey”. This district is a fashionable, busy area, with hundreds of apartments and many clubs, restaurants and bars. Here you will find a large amusement park - Tivoli World - where you can enjoy various rides and slides, together with a daily dance, musical and children's events and this is all just 5 minutes' walk from Arroyo de la Miel train station.
A small municipal museum [Museo Benalmadena] contains artefacts from the bronze and middle ages which have been found locally. However the museum takes price in its collection of Precolombian art said to be amongst the most important of its kind in Spain, with jewellery, statuary, and ceramics from all the major cultures. The museum can be found on Avenida Juan Peralta and is open Monday to Friday 10:00-14:00 and then 16:00-19:00.
A visit to the tiny church at the top of Benalmadena will reward you with magnificent views of the coast along which you will find three reminders of Benalmadena's Phoenician inhabitants - stone watch-towers which were buiilt to look out for pirate invaders. The Castillo de Bil-Bil, which can be found on the seafront, was built as a private house in the 1930s and only recently converted into an exhibition hall where concerts and exhibitions are held.
