CASARES HOLIDAYS & CASARES HOTELS
If you are planning your holidays to Casares and are looking at hotels in Casares, the following information may help by giving you an overview of this popular resort in the
Costa del Sol, Spain.
To holiday in Casares, is to take time out in an immaculate
pueblo [village] suspended from a hillside beneath its castle. Andalucia is full of
pueblos blancos [white villages] with flowerf-filled patios, which dazzle on innumerable hilltops and Casares is one of them.
Due to the proximity to the coast [just 18km - 11miles] from
Estepona, Casares is less remote that the other White Towns of Gaucin, Jimena de Libar and Serrania de Ronda, and has a sprinking of ex-patriates' homes and the craft shops and restaurants that spring up as a result.
Casares allegedly takes its name from Julius Caesar who used to favour the sulphuric spinrgs down the mountainside outside Manilva. The spa is no longer operational, but the strange-smelling water continues to gush out.
Head for Plaza de Espana the main square which has a welcoming pavement cafe. In the square, take a look at the status of Blas Infant - the Andalucia Nationalist leader who was born in Casares in 1885 and was executed by Franco's rebels at the start of the Civil War. Just of the square, in Calle Carrera, you will find the house where he was born which has now been turned into a museum and tourist office.
The Moorish Alcazar is built on Roman ruins and if you make your way to the top you will be rewarded with stunning views of the coast.
The ruined church next to the fortress is the Iglesia de la Encarnacion which was built in 1505, when Spain had been free from the Moors for a number of years. It remained in use until 1845 until the building was badly damaged by anarchists during the Civil War of 1936-39. Today, unfortunately, it is locked and deserted.
Near this church you will find the Hermitage of Vera Cruz. The most striking thing is the large domed alcove which may have been an altar room. Three of its four walls are still standing and they are pitted with bullet holes. During the the Civil War, when the church was reduced to ruins, it was common for factions to dispose of their enemies by hurling them in time honoured fashion into the deep gorge below.
