Fuengirola is a lively, popular and family orientated resort located in the
Costa del Sol, 9km [6 miles] along the coast from
Benalmadena and 18km dwon the coast from
Torremolinos. One of the main attractions whilst on your holiday in Fuengirola is the big, safe sweep of beach which offers many water activities including waterskiing, pedalos, windsurfing boards, parascending and wave runners and is the centre of activity, both day and night. The 7km of clean sandy beaches are split into restaurant/beach strips with each one renting out lounge chairs, parasols and pedalos.
Fuengirola is lined with one of the longest promenades on the Mediterranean, taking two and a half hours to walk from one end to the other. Located just behind this palm-lined promenade you will find the older fishermen's district of Santa Fe which has retained its Andalucian character. Its narrow, whitewashed street contains some of the best restaurants, especially around Plaza de Constitucion [the main square] which is along Calle Moncaya and is nicknamed the "Street of Hungry".
Shopping on your Fuengirola holiday is varied with a range of shops from cheap souvenir shops to high-class boutiques. On Tuesday mornings, the central streets make way for the weekly market, which is known as the most popular and colourful on the coast. It is a great place to buy fruit, vegetables, clothes and shoes as well as local crafts. There are four hypermarkets situated just outside of Fuengirola offering choice to the increasing number of residents. Visit Centro Comercial Parque Miramar which is a modern shopping centre located on Avenida de la Encarnacion.
For the children on holiday in Fuengirola, how about the Parque Aquatico which is just outside the town on the
Mijas road. Waterslides, rapids and tubes keep older children amused, while a separate min-park caters for todlers. The park is open from April to October from 10:00-19:00. Or how about Parquelandia which has swings, slides, a trampoline, bouncy castle and mini-karting on the seafront at Puerto Deportivo, Paseo Maritimo and is open Monday-Friday 12:30-20:00
Daily fishing trips, including dolphin spotting and sunset cruises can be found at the marina.
There is a popular zoo with a simulated rainforest and more than 140 animal species. This can be found in Avenida Camilo Jose Cela and is open daily from 10:00-22:00 [24:00 in high season].
If you are on your Fuengirola holidays in July, then why not attend the biggest festival in the resort which is held on the 16 July [Dia de la Virgen del Carmen] during which 120 bearers carry a heavy platform supporting a lavish effigy of the Virgin in a 2 hour procession from Los Boliches church into the sea. From July to September there are music and dance performances held in the Arabic Castillo Sohail which is also the venue for a medieval market in August.
