MIJAS TRAVEL GUIDE
Costa del Sol, SpainIf you are looking for a holiday hotel or apartment in Mijas, the following information may help by giving you an overview on the resort.
Mijas is situated just 8km [5 miles] inland from
Fuengirola. It is perched among pine forests on a mountainside away from the urban sprawl of
Fuengirola, where it is overwhelmed by tourists searching for a typical Andalucian town.
Surrounded by modern villas and other developments, the heart of the village preserves steep streets and white washed houses, not forgetting to mention the overabundant amount of bars, restaurants and shops. Its present layout dates back to Moorish times when the village served as a granary for Fuengirola as a defence against the Christians.
Traffic is banned from the centre of Mijas, however there are “donkey taxis” to escort you from the car park through its narrow streets to explore. They will also take you to the plaza next to Spain’s only square bullring, which is said to be the oldest in the country, dating back to Moorish times. It was built back in 1920 and is located just infront of the parish church, which is built on the site of an Arabic mosque.
Opposite the bullring are beautifully tended gardens which slope down to a cliff top look out [Mirador] which boats fine views of the coast.
Without doubt, a trip to Mijas must involve a visit to the best-stocked souvenir shops on the coast, brimming with leather, woven goods, ceramic articles and esparto glass.
High above the village is the Calvario Hermitage; a small chapel built approximately 1710. Black iron crosses mark a short walking trail through the pine forest, with breathtaking views of the coast and the village below as a bonus.
