Nerja is situated in the
Costa del Sol 56km to the east of
Malaga and is a popular destination for British, German and Scandinavian holiday makers. The town is smaller than the big resorts to the west and has a less concentrated high-rise development, despite its development into a holiday destination in the 1960s.
Nerja is a lively, bustling place that is easy-going and has a more informal feel than its western neighbours of
Malaga,
Benalmadena and
Marbella. The majority of the accommodation is situated in the attractive centre or white washed villas on the hills behind it.
As some of the best and most deserted beaches are a short distance and a bicycle or car would be a good idea. The beaches are prettier but smaller and are squeezed into rocky coves. The two beaches nearest the town are Playa Calahonda, a fisherman's beach, and Playa El Salon. The best beach to visit, Playa Burriana, is 20 minutes walk away along the coastal footpath to the east of Nerja and offers superb facilities, lively bars and restaurants.
The nightlife in Nerja is lively, although less so than in
Torremolimos, but at night the town comes alive with restaurants, tapas bars, with fairy lights hung over the narrow cobbled streets. Every year, in August, a song and dance festival takes place and the town is filled with Flamenco dancers and classical guitarists.
Nerja’s most famous attraction is the Balcon de Europa. It is a short promenade lined with palm trees protruding over a couple of small coves and offers beautiful views of the coast on either side. The old part of town huddles around the promenade and spills over the edge of the cliff. Its winding, narrow streets are lines with souvenir shops and cafes, where you will observe the local residents enjoying their morning coffees.
Another large tourist attraction for people on their Nerja holidays is the Cueva de Nerja which lies 3km east of town. This enormous 4km-long cave complex, hollowed out by water around 5million years ago and once inhabited by Stone Age hunters, is full of stalactites and stalagmites. Don't miss the huge central column in Cataclysm Hall. If you are lucky enough to be on your holidays in Nerja during July, the Spanish and international ballet and music stars perform in the cave as part of the Festival Cueva de Nerja.
If you would like to visit a market whilst on your holiday in Nerja, then head into town and to Calle Almirante Ferrandiz where you will find a lively market on Tuesdays and then on Sunday morning head north of town in Ubanizacion Flamingo.
Nerja celebrates the sea-related festivals the Noche de San Juan on 23 June, and the Virgen del Carmen on 16 July. The annual feria is in the second week in October. Since 2004, Nerja has also hosted a highly successful Healing Arts Festival in early September.
