SAN PEDRO DE ALCANTARA HOLIDAYS AND SAN PEDRO DE ALCANTARA HOTELS

If you are planning your holidays to San Pedro de Alcantara and are looking at hotels in San Pedro de Alcantara, the following information may help by giving you an overview of this resort in the Costa del Sol, Spain.

San Pedro de Alcantara is a little town west of Marbella, approximately 20km [12 ½ miles] and is located on a broad strip of coastal lowland sheltered by rocky hills.

Unlike the big holiday resorts, San Pedro de Alcantara boasts a genuine Spanish community. It has an easy-going, relaxed life style, and in the many hidden squares you will find the locals sipping coffee or an early morning fino and reading the daily newspaper in the morning sun. All around are large, smart villas that lie hidden behind walls and sub-tropical gardens. Much of the town lies inland behind the coastal highway.

San Pedro de Alcantara boasts a well maintained stretch of Blue Flag seafront and three of the most appealing archaeological remains anywhere on the coast. There are superb watersports facilities at Bora-Bora Beach including water-skiing, rowboats, canoes and motorboats and not forgetting to mention scuba diving.

4km east at Rio Verde is a Roman villa decorated with delightful black and white mosaics showing culinary objects such as cooking pots, just, water pitchers and cooking utensils, as well as birds, fish and a Medusa's head. This is on the road between Puerto Banus and San Pedro de Alcantara [leave the main road before the Puente Romano Hotel and follow the signs]. You can find guided tours during the week.

San Pedro de Alcantara dates back to the 1860s, when it was founded as a model farming community with an agricultural training school. Today, many of its country estates are wealthy tourist enclaves or golf courses. Be sure to head for the Central Plaza with its gracious Parish Church and narrow streets, which are packed with small shops, sidewalk cafes and restaurants. On Thursdays is the street market with the usual hustle and bustle, which is a bargain shoppers' paradise!

Take a pleasant walk from the centre of town to the beachfront along the Avenida del Marques del Duero. It is an attractive wide avenue edged with palm trees. The modern promenade is perfect for continuing that walk and is lined with many beachside restaurants [chiringuitos].

The unmissable giant arch over the coastal highway [N340] at San Pedro is emblazoned with the sign MARBELLA, contains a helpful regional tourist office and is usually open until midnight during the summer months.

Situated on the right-hand side of the main road leading from San Pedro de Alcantara to be beach are the foundations of an important Visigothic Christian basilica, dating back to the 6th century. The basilica, surrounded by a graveyard, was discovered in the 10th century as eucalyptus forests were being planted along the coast. Some of the riches retrieved from the graves are in the Museum of Archaeology in Madrid.

Just along the beach from the basilica is the shell of a Roman bathhouse which was discovered in 1926. The 7 chambers, serving as steam rooms in the 3rd century, are constructed around an octagonal patio above a central, octagonal bath. A circular gallery on the upper floors gives access to several smallher rooms.
