DUBROVNIK HOLIDAY GUIDE
If you are planning a holiday in Dubrovnik, the following information may help by giving you an overview of the resort and the surrounding area.
Dubrovnik lies in the south of Croatia on the Dalmation coast and has been called the most perfectly preserved medieval city in the world, and has rivalled
Venice as a major sea trading port.
Founded in the 7th century, the town was under the protection of the Byzantine Empire. After the Crusades it came under the sovereignty of Venice and later became part of the Kingdom of Hungary. Between the 14th century and 1808 the town ruled itself as a free state named Repubblica di Ragusa with its success based on maritime trade with its huge fleet of merchant ships carrying goods to western Europe.
The best way to explore Dubrovnik is by walking along its enormous outer walls, built between the 12th and 17th centuries. These walls are up to 25m high and 6m thick and you will find 16 towers along the route - all offering wonderful views of the sea and the tiled roofs of the city.
The city itself is also enjoyable to explore. The main street, or Placa, has white limestone paving dating from the 1460s and the Sponza Palace is also worth visiting as it was one of the few building not destroyed in the earthquake of 1667. Other sights you may like to see are the Rector's Palace, the Cathedral, the Franciscan Monastery and the Dominican Monastery.
There's an excellent choice of bars, pizzerias and restaurants together with a handful of nightclubs and discos.
The Dubrovnik Summer Festival is the most significant cultural event in Croatia and includes theatre and classical music performances as wel las folk music events.
