Ayia Napa, also spelt as Agia Napa, is a major tourist resort infamous for its nightlife. Although Ayia Napa does have some of the world’s best nightlife the resort has so much more to offer.
The centre of the village retains some charm due to its monastery and well-watered gardens, which provide a peaceful haven away from the hustle and bustle. One of the main historical sites is the 16th century monastic church built over a cave. During the 17th century the monastery became very rich and owned much of the land in the area. Sadly it fell into disrepair during the 18th century and was duly abandoned - however was later restored under British rule and now belongs to the World Council of Churches.
Ayia Napa has many wonderful beaches with glorious white sand and inviting crystal clear blue waters, the coastline is considered to be the beach on offer in relation to beaches in Cyprus. Most of the beaches along this stretch of coast offer many water sports including water-skiing, scuba diving and windsurfing.
The old quarter of Ayia Napa has narrow cobbled streets with little shops offering traditional souvenirs of lace, pottery and leather. Much like it’s bar scene, Ayia Napa has a large variety of restaurants, offering not only Greek cuisine but also a whole host of international dishes. Although Ayia Napa is mainly known for attracting the young and lively, there is something to keep everyone entertained, including golf, go-karting, bowling, mini-golf and a fantastic water park with an ‘Ancient Greece’ theme.
