Agios Lazaros Church is located in the central part of Larnaca. According to legend, St Lazarus, having been raised from the dead by Christ, came to Larnaca to live out the rest of his days. When St Lazarus died he was buried here, however his remains were stolen leaving only his empty tomb in the south apse. Agios Lazaros Church itself was built in the 9th century and extensively restored during the 17th century including the decoration of its exquisite ornate interior. According to the Cyprus Tourism organisation it is one of the most outstanding Byzantine Monuments.
