If you are planning a Prague city break, and are looking for an Prague hotel and flight, the following information may help by giving you an overview on the city of Prague.
Prague has been the political, cultural and economic centre of the Czech state for over 1000 years. Lying on the bend in the River Vltava, half-way between Berlin and Vienna, Prague is set on seven hills topped by lovely castles and churches. Prague is widely considered to be one of the most attractive cities in Europe. Stroll the medieval cobbled streets, relax in the ancient squares and admire the many architectural treasures of this "city of a hundred spires". In 1993, after the split of Czechoslovakia, Prague became the capital city of the new Czech Republic. Since the end of Communism, Prague has become one of the most visited cities in Europe, famous for its café culture and vibrant nightlife in the most beautiful surroundings.
Prague’s heyday was during the fourteenth century and the reign of Charles IV. Charles founded the first university in central, northern and eastern Europe, today known at the Charles University. He also founded New Town, adjacent to the Old Town, rebuilt Prague Castle and Vysehrad, and erected Charles Bridge. Under his reign, Charles was crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. He wanted Prague to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world, dominating the whole empire, with Prague Castle dominating the city and the Gothic Cathedral dominating the castle. To this end, he created many beautiful buildings which are still with us today.
The castle was founded in the ninth century, and has since remained the seat of power. It is one of the larges castles in the world, and houses the crown jewels of the Bohemian Kingdom. Just outside is the eighteenth century Sternberg Palace {Sternbersky palac] home to the National Gallery with its superb collection of Old Masters. The complex also contains the wonderful Royal Gardens and the stately Gothic St Vitus’ Cathedral, begun in 1344. The walls of the chapel that houses the tomb of St Wenceslas are lined with precious stones and beautiful paintings.
Prague’s old town [Stare Mesto] is an atmospheric area of cobbled streets, alleyways, superb churches and palaces. The Little Quarter [Mala Strana] lies below the castle walls. This district features many notable historic buildings, among them St Nicholas Cathedral. The Charles Bridge is another must-see. Built in 1357 with a tower at either end, it offers spectacular views of the city to those who cross it.

Eating out in Prague: Eating out is a relatively cheap and easy affair. However, watch out for the restaurants in the Charles Bridge area as they tend to be more pricey! Main courses are predominantly meat based, accompanies by dumplings, potatoes or sauerkraut, and are dressed in rich sauces. Other specialities include Prague ham served with whipped cream and horseradish. For those with a sweet tooth, Palacinky is a popular local dessert consisting of pancakes with ice cream topped with chocolate and whipped cream.
Shopping in Prague: For shopping, Wenceslas Square is a bustling thoroughfare with an array of modern stores that are both fashionable and expensive. If you wander along the historic streets from the Powder Tower to the castle, you will find all manner of interesting wares. Smaller shops and craft stalls are more likely to sell hand-embroidered and leather goods, wooden toys, and Czech crystal and glassware. These souvenirs are definitely some of the best buys in Prague.
