Charles Bridge is a stone Gothic bridge that connects the Old Town and Mala Strana. It was originally called the Stone Bridge for the first several centuries and was constructed by Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV in 1357. In charge of the construction was architect Petr Parler and it is said the egg yolks were mixed into the mortar to strengthen the construction of the bridge. Charles Bridge has survived many floods, the most recent being in August 2002, when the country experienced the worst flood in the past 500 years - so the eggs may not have been such a bad idea!
Charles Bridge is ont the top of every Prague visitor's must-see list. It is also very popular with local artists, musicians and souvenir vendors, whose stands line both sides of the bridge, all year round. A Great time to see the bridge is at sunset, when everyone can take in the breathtaking views of the fully lit Prague Castle against the evening sky.
The Bridge is now a pedestrian zone and is always full with people. If you wish to enjoy the bridge by yourself, take a trip there at night or early in the morning.
