Copenhagen Flights, Copenhagen Breaks and Copenhagen Hotels:

Wonderful, Wonderful Copenhagen … Thanks to the Danny Kaye song, you know the rest. Copenhagen is a city that should be visited at least once in a lifetime, because the Danish capital has special charm. Denmark has the world’s oldest monarchy, and the royal family lives in the middle of the city at the Amalienborg Palace. Don’t be surprised to see Queen Margrethe out and about, as the royals are famously egalitarian.

A sense of history is everywhere as you stroll through cobbled squares and narrow streets lined with old buildings, before finding the vast City Hall Square, bounded on one side by the renowned Tivoli Gardens with Stroget [the straight], Europe’s largest pedestrian shopping street, on the other. The square was constructed around 1900 in romantic style and revamped when Copenhagen was Cultural Capital of Europe in 1996. Walk down the broad Stroget and find Gammel Square, with an exquisite bronze fountain erected in 1608, then take a break at an open-air café in Grabrodre Square in the heart of this trendy shopping area.

There are excellent green parks in Copenhagen and the Tivoli pleasure gardens offer all sorts of entertaining experiences [especially for those who like roller coasters]. You must not miss the Little Mermaid sculpted by Edward Eriksen in 1913.

The New Harbour [Nyhavn, built in the 17th century] is a picturesque waterside area, with mouth-watering restaurants and lively bars. Danish fairy-tale author Hans Christian Andersen lived here for some years. It serves as a starting point for water tours that give a wonderfully different view of this special city.

Location of Copenhagen:
In the extreme east of Denmark, on the east coast of its largest island, Zealand (Sjaelland). 100 miles southeast of Aarhus. 95 miles east of Odense. 30 miles south of Helsingor. 5 miles northwest of the airport at Kastrup.

Beaches in Copenhagen:
People do not associate Copenhagen with beaches but in summer there is a choice. Amager Strand lies close to the airport; Klampenborg and Charlottenlund about 4 miles north of the city. In the north of Zealand, long, sandy, quiet beaches abound.

Shopping in Copenhagen:
Although prices are relatively high, shopping in Copenhagen is varied and appealing. The pedestrianised city-centre streets, particularly Stroget, are lined with designer stores and fashion outlets; Scandinavia's largest department store, numerous antique shops and specialist retailers can also be found here. Another busy thoroughfare is Vesterbrogade with a more affordable selection. Christianshavn district has a number of quirky and second-hand shops. Markets are held in Gammeltorv Square (mornings) and Israels Plads (Sat) with fruit, flowers, bric-a-brac and curios traded. Porcelain, crystal glassware, jewellery and knitwear are all worth looking out for. Denmark is also well known for its stylish home furnishings and kitchenware.

Eating out in Copenhagen:
Eating out can be expensive, though there are plenty of relatively cheap sandwich bars, pizzerias and fast-food outlets. International and ethnic cuisine is well represented and there are countless small pubs and cafes. The city centre, Nyhavn waterfront and Tivoli Gardens are full of restaurants, though these can be pricey; Christiania is more affordable. Set lunchtime menus are usually easier on the pocket. Smorrebrod (open sandwiches), seafood (particularly herring), goulash and buffets are local favourites. Alcohol is quite expensive.
