CAIRO TRAVEL GUIDE
EgyptIf you are looking for a holiday hotel, or apartment in Cairo, the following information may help by giving you an overview on the resort.
Africa’s largest city, Cairo is really a collection of different districts divided only by the Nile, which flows sedately through it. The amazing antiquities of the Egyptian, Coptic and Islamic civilizations that can be seen here add another dimension to the vibrant, chaotic, noisy multitudinous, multi-racial feel of the place. This is the Arab world’s most accessible political and cultural centre, a magnet for the agricultural poor.
Cairo is overwhelming – grab a taxi and visit the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: The Pyramids of Giza. Built over 4,600 years ago, and known throughout the world, your first sight of them rising from the desert is awe-inspiring. Nearby sits the sphinx, equally unbelievable – try the son-et-lumiere one night for a mind-blowing experience. The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities is another must – we would recommend a guided tour so you can see the most important artefacts. The Museum holds infinitely more than the fantastic Tutankhamun exhibition.
Modern Cairo is based around Midan Tahrir [Liberation Square], on the east bank, not far from the Islamic, medieval city, its narrow streets home to hundreds of Islamic monuments, the chief of which is Ibn Tulun’s austerely beautiful mosque. Coptic Cairo, probably the birthplace of the city, is a peaceful area of cobbled alleys, convents, churches and synagogues, and the Coptic Museum contains many dead treasures, including particularly fine textiles. The City of the Dead is also a city of the living - this huge area of domed, carved, palatial mausoleums has its own monasteries and schools.
Come early in the evening, make sure that you are ensconced near the Nile with a cold drink in your hand. As the call to the prayer rings out and the buildings glow in the setting sun, time is suspended for a moment, allowing you to catch your breath before plunging into Cairo’s hyperactive nightlife.
