Estonia is an independent country on the east coast of the Baltic Sea bordered by Russia to the east, and Latvia in the south. The largest cities are Tallinn [the capital], Tartu and Parnu. A third of the land comprises plains and low pleateaus and is forested, and agriculture [especially dairy farming] is the main industry. Although Estonia is the smallest of the Baltic countries, it has lovely seaside towns, country villages and marshlands along with castles.
The weather in Estonia is dictated by the Baltic sea. In the summer the skies are blue and temperatures can reach 30°C and the summer average is 16°C. During the summer, you can expect about 19 hours of daylight [known localy as the "white nights"]. In spring and autumn you can expect light rainfall and in the winter the rain can turn to snow when the temperatures drop below zero.
Shopping in Estonia:Prices in Estonia can be cheaper than in many other EU countries making this a great shopping destination. Larger shops are usually open 7 days a week and the smaller shops are closed on Sundays. If you are searching for a bargain you will find plenty of books, jewellery, alcohol, textiles and wooden handicraft items. Estonia has a very strong market and fair culture and all cities and even smaller towns have their own market place where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and dairy produce, handicraft and household items.
Eating out in Estonia:Food and eating out in Estonia can be cheap compared with other European countries with wild board, venison, bear and deer widely available roasted, as pate or as salami-style sausages. Traditonal Estonian cooking involves pork, potatoes and a variety of vegetables. Try some traditional Estonian dishes such as
Silgusoust [Baltic sprats with bacon and cream],
Mulgikapsad [pork with sauerkraut and boiled potatoes],
Verivorst [blood sausage and barley],
Sult [boiled port in aspic jelly],
Suitsulohe [smoked salmon]. Beer lovers will enjoy a wide range of malt and rye beers and something to try is the popular drink
Kali [a cross between beery and cola in taste, but alcohol free].
The Language of Estonia:Estonians speak Estonian! It is used as a mother tongue by just under 1.1 million people in the world. Russian is spoken by about 25% of people in Estonia and is heard mostly in Tallinn and the east Estonian regions.
