Bordeaux Hotels, Bordeaux Holidays and Accommodation in Bordeaux :
The historic centre of Bordeaux, the “Port of the Moon”, is France’s most recent UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed in 2007 as “an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble, created in the Age of Enlightenment, whose values continued up to the first half of the 20th century, with more protected buildings than any other French city, except Paris. This supplemented UNESCO’s earlier inclusion of three churches in the Pilgrim Routes of Santiago de Compostela Site.
Bordeaux is south-west France on both banks of the River Garonne, with access to the Bay of Biscay, has developed harmoniously over the centuries. But don’t expect to find a picturesque time warp – despite its eminence as a capital of traditional fine wine, this is very much a modern working city that is forever sprawling outwards, with an active port and high-tech industries.
Yet the old town has one of the larges concentrations of 18th century structures in Europe, as it was one of the first French cities to embrace the idea of large-scale urban redevelopment, in this case overseen by Jacques Gabriel, then his son Ange-Jaceques, architects to King Louis XV. Some 5,000 buildings survive from the 1700s. Despite this glorious legacy, Bordeaux had become seriously run down, but a determined effort to clean up the city and make the most of its heritage was aimed at making the place more tourist-friendly to increase annual numbers beyond the current 2,500,000.
The effort has certainly paid dividends. For a delicious taste of the architectural feast of Old Bordeaux, just stroll along the river at the Quai de la Douane, see the monumental Place de la Bourse, then find the cobbled Place du Parliament and the maze of narrow lanes and small squares around the Gothic St Peter’s Church.
