CORRALEJO TRAVEL GUIDE
Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain

If you are looking for a holiday hotel, apartment or villa in Corralejo, the following information may help by giving you an overview on the resort.

A flavour of old Spain can experienced in Corralejo [a delightful former fishing village] which is now the island's main resort. Just 45 minutes from the airport, life bustles around the port area, where the ferry departs daily to Lanzarote and boats sail to the Isla de los Lobos. The charming old centre is quiet by day but atmospheric by night.

Experience the island's magic by dining in the old square, known as "Music Square" where local musicians provide live music and song. It is also very much a developing resort with new hotels and apartments opening each year, alongside improvements to the local amenities, pavements and roads. Whilst many are content to laze around their pool, the lure of the wild, untamed landscapes tempts many others to trek out to the nearby sandy beaches and dunes. The major attraction: 7 broad miles of fine, golden sand with some smaller bays, starting 2 miles outside town; the waters are clear and an intense shade of blue. They are, however, affected by currents and are therefore unsuitable for small children. The town beaches are somewhat more sheltered and provide safer areas for children; most of these, however, have a band of volcanic rock along the waterline. There are dunes [which are a protected nature reserve] just behind Corralejo are the island's most impressive and are reminiscent of a miniature Sahara.

Corralejo is located on the north tip of the island, facing the little islet of Los Lobos. 23 miles north of the capital, Puerto del Rosario and 26 miles north of the airport.

There is a central shopping street in the town centre with supermarkets and many shops but limited variety. Large twice-weekly market. Local wickerwork, pottery and embroidery are easily found.

There is a good choice of restaurants and some friendly bars; fresh fish is the speciality.

The more modern facility consists of a marina for pleasure craft and room for the ferry services to Lanzarote and Lobos, a small island that is a 15 minute ferry ride from Fuerteventura. There are various trips aimed at those on holiday that run from the harbour, and bookings for these can be made at one of the booths dotted about the area.
