Ther Berlin Wall was a physical barrier completely encircling West Berlin, seperating it from the German Democratic Republic [East Germany], including East Berlin. Construction started on 13 August 1961 and eventually was opened on 9 November 1989 and during this period at least 98 people were confirmed killed trying to cross the wall.
The Berlin Wall memorial site was designed by Stuttgart architects Kohlhoff and Kohlhoff and eas set up in 1998. A short stretch of the border has been reconstructed, including the wall on the western side, the posterior Wall and the death strip inbetween. The Berlin Wall Memorial, the Berlin Wall Documentation Centre the Chapel of Reconciliation, and the original sections of the Wall along the cemetery Sophien-Friedhof and on the grounds of the S-Bahn station Nordbahnhof form an ensemble that is to be developed into a “commemorative landscape” over the next few years.
