The Berlin Zoological Garden [Zoologischer Garten Berlin in German] is the oldest and the most internationally well known zoo in Germany. It was opened on 1844 and comprises an area of 35 hectares with almost 1,400 different species and approximately 14,000 animals.
In 2007, the zoo and its aquarium were visited by 3.2 million visitors. It is considered to be the most visited zoo in Europe and of the most popular worldwide. The famous attractions within the zoological garden include regualr animal feedings and have several globally known animals like Knut, the polar bear and Bao Bao, the Giant Panda.
All the animals are housed in enclosures that are speially designed to recreate their natural habitat. In the aquarium, it has one of the largest collections of the kind in the world. Its three stories houses some 6,500 animals in 500 species. There are marine ans fresh-water sections, a crocodile hall and an insectarium, in which the animals are ale to live in their natural envioronment.
