Hamburg Hotels, Hamburg Flights and Hamburg City Breaks:
This port is surely one of the liveliest places in Germany. The country’s second-largest city is strategically placed on the Jutland Peninsular with continental Europe to the south, Scandinavia to the north, the Baltic Sea to the east and the North Sea to the west. Hamburg lies at the junction of the Rivers Elbe, Aslter and Bille and is the commercial and cultural capital of northern Germany.
Although founded as a defensive settlement by Charlemagne in the 9th century, Hamburg didn’t really take off for another thousand years, expanding rapidly in the 19th century to become Europe’s third-largest port [nowadays second-largest], even though it is 90km [56 miles] from the sea up the navigable Elbe. With its three rivers, canals and two lakes, water is never far away in Hamburg.
This is a tough working city that would not appear to be a natural tourist destination, though efforts are being made to increase the city’s appeal. Many people already come here for specific activities, like concerts, sport events, congresses of fairs, and Hamburg actually contains two of Germany’s most popular attractions. The harbour area has a wonderful promenade, the Landungsbrucken. Then there’s the [in]famous Reeperbahn, Europe’s largest red light district and centre of the city’s nightlife, with endless theatres, bars and clubs.

Hamburg is not over-endowed with spectacular heritage buildings, as a result of a destructive fire in 1842, subsequent redevelopment and World War II bomb damage. But there is still plenty to see, including the old warehouse district [Speicherstadt], Hamburg Museum, the Art Hall [Kuntshalle] Museum, a magnificent Town Hall [Rathaus], the ship-like Kontorhaus from 1922, one of the few remaining medieval streets [Krameramtsstuben], Wallanlagen Park [containing some remnants of town ramparts], long-established Hamburg Zoo and Deichtor Halls [a former market now showcasing modern art and photography].
