Munich is glamorous with wonderful architecture, open-air stages and museums. Germany’s third-largest city and lies on the River Isar north of the Bavarian Alps. Munich began with a monastery and river crossing in the 12th century, with the dukes of Bavaria ruling continuously until 1918. Munich’s history after World War I was turbulent, starting with a Communist uprising and ending in domination by Hitler’s Nazi party, which regarded the city as its heartland. Several so-called ‘Fuhrer buildings’ were erected around Konisgplatz, where rallies were held [two are still here]. The infamous Dachau concentration camp was nearby.

Following World War II, traditional rebuilding left this monumental city looking much has it had done before, with a compact but stunning inner city. Spacious Marienplatz lies at the centre, containing old and new town halls. Three medieval city gates survive, one – Karlstor – being the oldest structure in Stachus, a square that contains the Palace of Justice. There are splendid churches to be found, like the Romanesque St Peter’s, Munich’s oldest, or the 15th century Cathedral of Our Lady [Frauenkirche]. On the edge of the old town is the magnificent Royal Residence [Residenz] now a fabulous museum.

Four grand 19th century avenues run out from the centre. The neoclassical Brienner Strasse opens into the imposing Konigsplatz, now a gallery and museum quarter. The Italianate Ludwigstrasse has many fine public buildings. Neo-Gothic Maximilianstrasse encompasses some of Munich’s most expensive shops. Lastly, Prinzregentenstrasse with its many museums sweeps across the river. Away from the centre, several places are to be found.

In fact, Munich has attractions too numerous to list, including parks, wonderful buildings, interesting museums and lively street life. If you only visit one German City, make it this one…and stay for a week. Munich may be the country’s most expensive city, but its worth every penny.

Shopping in Munich:
The best shopping is around Marienplatz Square and the Sending Gate. Down side streets you will find traditional Lederhosen tailors and for designer fashions try Maximillianstrasse - Munich's most exclusive avenue. The best place to buy food is the large open-air Viktualienmarkt. Also check out Schrannenhalle, rebuilt in 2005 with food and craft stalls and cultural events.

Eating out in Munich:
Why not wash down a weisswurst [white veal saussage] with a cold pint of beet or a shnapps! Perhaps Munich is best known for ...

Oktoberfest ...

Oktobefest is the world’s largest beer festival which attracts a staggering 6 million visitors each year and who manage to drink around 6 million litres of beer over 2 weeks. Oktoberfest actually starts in September with processions and brass bands and literally takes over the “Wiesn” - he nickname for the Theresienwiese to the southwest of the city centre.

Fourteen vast tents are surrounded by around 200 fairground rides and sideshows. Each tent is filled with rows of wooden tables where visitors down litre-sized Steins of beer and link arms to the pounding of oomph bands. The best time to visit is at lunch, when the tesnts are busy but not packed and it’s possible to enjoy a big meal in relative peace [roast chicken and plates of sausages are the norm]. In the evening the tents get crammed and visitors take to dancing on the tables.
