Hungary has a varied landscape from forests and mountains in the north to the vast plains covering the remainder of Hungary. The famous River Danube flows through the heart of the country and divides the capital - Budapest - in two.
Recently, tourism has become an important part of the economy of Hungary and one of the results of this has been the improvements in communications, banking facilities and public transport. One problem may be the language barrier however, staff at many tourist hotels, offices and other attractions usually speak English or German.
The most popular times to visit Hungary are between April and the end of June and then from the middle of August through to the end of October. July is normally very hot - especially in Budapest. From November through to March you will find many museums and places of interest have shorter opening hours or not open at all.
Eating out in Hungary:Perhaps Hungary is best known for its cuisine which incorporates a wide range of beers and meat-based dishes such a goulash which is normally spiced with paprika [Hungary's most famous export]. Hungary offers a good variety of place to eat. Look out for an
etterem - a restaurant offering Hungarian and international dishes, and the
csarda - a taverna serviing local specialities.
The Language of Hungary:Modern Hungarian comes from the language originally spoken by the Finno-Urgic tribes of the Urals. It differs from most other European languages although Slavic, German, Caucasian, Latin and Turkic words have been incorporated.
