SAN ANTONIO TRAVEL GUIDE
Ibiza, Balearic Islands, SpainIf you are looking for a holiday hotel or apartment in San Antonio, the following information may help by giving you an overview on the resort.
San Antonio [Sant Antoni de Portmany] is Ibiza’s second largest town and could hardly be more different from Ibiza Town. Yet for all its brash modernity, it is an historically interesting town.
To the north of the town is the Cave of Wine
Cova des Vi where dynamic cave paintings were discovered in 1917. The cave is not open to the public, but as it is closed only by an iron grill, the paintings are quite visible. San Antonio developed into a small town before the 1960s and 1970s ushered in the era of mass tourism. Virtually overnight, San Antonio was transformed into the island’s major package-holiday centre. While the development of hotels, bars, discos and souvenir shops brought enormous economic benefits to some of the townsfolk, it was at the expense of al landscape that had once been among the finest on the island.
San Antonio BayThe area generally referred to as San Antonio Bay runs south from the town of San Antonio. This is a big bay and there are plenty of small resorts and beaches in both directions from the main town. The first main area you come to is called Cala de Bou, on the far side of San Antonio’s harbour but these days more or less a continuation of the main town. It makes a goods based if you don’t want to be in the absolute heart of club city, but you can still reach it easily if you want to. Cala de Bou has several small beaches, so the crowds tend to get dispersed among them.
Further round the Bay is Port des Torrent, an old village that has become a favourite tourist centre. A little further on is the incredibly popular beach of Cala Bassa, in a lovely bay backed by cliffs. From the top of these, there is a terrific view back to San Antonio, from where regular boat trips bring plenty of day visitors..
San Antonio - Ibiza’s Club CapitalThis is not the place to come if you fancy a quiet and relaxing break, for here the days last all night and the nights last all day. It is hard to believe that this was a tiny fishing village about 30 years ago, blessed with a natural harbour. Now, in additional to the club scene, it is also one of the busiest ports in the Balearic Islands.
San Antonio is also known as Sant Antoni or San Antone, but just about everyone calls it plain San An. The high season months of July, August and beginning of September are the best times to come if you are looking for buzzing nightlife, when the predominantly British holidaymakers are joined by an increasing number of German, Italian, Scandinavian and Dutch visits. With top clubs, Djs, hot bands, a cosmopolitan mix of clubbers, local residents, mature partygoers, fresh faces, a wide range of sexualities and celebrities, San Antonio is the place to come for clubbing and nightlife.
