Otherwise known as Santa Eularia de Riu [or Santa Eulalia del Rio], this is the only town in the Balearic Islands to be set on a river. The townsfolk’s pride in their unique setting is reflected in the addition to the name [most people would know the resort as just Santa Eulalia, but “del Rio” has been added to the name - meaning “of the river”]. However, the river is barely more than a stream and in summer often dries to little more than a trickle between pools. Both river and town are named for the saint to whom the church on nearby Puig de Missa is dedicated.
Santa Eulalia grew up as a market town for the local area as it was a fertile plain well-watered by the river. Reflecting this past, the town still has an old quarter with narrow alleys and whitewashed houses, each with a characteristic A-shaped chimney.
However, Santa Eulalia was also one the first placed on Ibiza to attract foreign visitors, a fact which accounts for the modern seafront and harbour. The development of both these areas has been thoughtful, the buildings being architecturally interesting as well as reflecting the prosperity tourism has brought to the town.
At the northern end of the front is the harbour, filled with rows of expensive boats, its jetties lined with shops, excellent restaurants and delightful bars and cafes in which to while away an hour or two on your Santa Eulalia Holidays.
