Naples City Breaks, Naples Hotels and Naples Flights:
“See Naples and die” goes the old phrase – but things aren’t quite as bad as that, even though Italy’s third-largest city has plenty of non-tourist areas and is home to the powerful Camorra (local Mafia). It is the largest and most prosperous city in southern Italy, overlooking the Bay of Naples and overlooked in turn by the brooding volcanic presence of Mount Vesuvius, mainland Europe’s only active volcano. The historic centre became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
Perhaps the city’s slightly dubious reputation explains why it gets fewer visitors than its undoubted attractions merit – it is a beautiful place with a long history attested to by many fine monuments. Or maybe it’s the manic traffic! The vibrant old city is chaotically Italian – narrow medieval (and earlier) streets, no pavements, no street signs, no traffic lights, no parking restrictions, street markets and eager hawkers, washing hanging everywhere…yet somehow it all seems to function perfectly.
There are heritage sights a-plenty, including half-a-dozen castles. The Bourbon Palace of Reggio di Capodimonte [now a museum] dominates the city, and has a superb view of the bay. Down on the water, the 12th century Castel dell’Ovo is a stern presence. Fine churches abound – the Cathedral, Santa Chiara, San Lorenzo Maggiore, Gesu Nuovo. Museums include the important National Archaeological Museum and the San Martino Museum in a wonderful old monastery. From the old town, the pedestrianised Via Toledo with its smart shops leads to the new centre.
Actually, despite all the contrasts and contradictions, it is easy to sum up this extraordinary city – visitors either love Naples to bits…or hate it on sight!

Flight time from the UK: approximately 2 hours 30 minutes
Shopping in Naples:Via Toledo is the most popular shopping thoroughfare; Via Chiaia boasts famous Italian fashion labels. Forcella market, with its din and good-natured haggling, has a broad range of goods including counterfeit perfume, leather goods, alcohol and gaudy local paraphernalia. Animated fish market at Santa Lucia.
Eating out in Naples:An abundance of restaurants, pizzerias and even fast-food joints (friggitorie). Plenty of quality fish and seafood, particularly at the waterfront restaurants of Santa Lucia, with clams a speciality; gargantuan inexpensive pizzas (invented here in the 18th century) and ingenious pasta dishes. The menu of the day (menu del giorno) is particularly good value, especially in small trattorias. Mozzarella cheese from buffalo milk is a local speciality and the wines of the region, including the red 'gragnano' and white 'falanghina', are good. Ice cream (gelato) should not be missed. With the exception of a few Japanese restaurants and Argentinian steakhouses, international options are scarce. Prices compare favourably with the UK.
