Pisa City Breaks, Pisa Hotels and Pisa Breaks:
There's a lot more to Pisa than the Leaning Tower; though that's an impressive start. The origins of this Tuscan city on the River Arno are lost in the mists of time, but as the main port between Genoa and Ostia it was an important Roman settlement. Pisa reached its zenith as a maritime power in the 11th century.
Indeed, it was loot from supporting the Norman crusade to evict Saracens from Sicily that provided funds to begin construction of what must surely be one of Italy's finest monuments - the walled Campo dei Miracoli [Field of Miracles] to the north of the old town centre. Miraculous indeed - the Leaning Tower [the Cathedral's bell tower] is but one element of this superb early complex, the others being the Cathedral of St Zeno itself, the circular Baptistry of St John and the massive Camposanto [the Holy Field, a monumental cemetery]. This is, inevitably, a UNESCO World Heritage Site - one of the best!
After being conquered by Naples, Pisa went into decline - the population today is mush the same as it was in the Middle Ages, helping to preserve Pisa's romantic medieval character. The ancient university [founded 1343] has become one of Italy's top universities, and tourism now makes a huge contribution to the city's economy.
After enjoying the miracles, it's well worth escaping the crowd by wandering around the old town's peaceful streets, admiring medieval palaces and university buildings. There are also fine bridges and churches to enjoy, including the Gothic masterpiece Santa Maria della Spina on the riverbank and the octagonal Sant'Agata. The city is also a place to shop, with up-market areas like elegantly arcaded Borgo Streto and a host of tempting little shops in the back streets.

Shopping in Pisa: The area around the Tower is packed with souvenir shops. Ignore then and walk to Corso Italia and the Borgo Stretto, the two main shopping streets in Pisa. Here, you will find all kinds of Italian fashion shops. The cheapest brands are in Corso Italia and the most well-known and elegant stores are in the medieval Borgo Stretto. Via Mercanti and Via dei Rigattieri boasts many excellent shops. All around the centre of the city there are dealers who sell old books and paintings. Another place to visit is the Mercato delle Vettovaglie [the fruit and vegetable market, in Piazza delle Vettovaglie] which is over 100 years old and is open from Mondays to Fridays.
Eating out in Pisa: In Pisa you can find typical meat-based and fish-based Tuscan cuisine. You should try the characteristic chickpea soup together with the so-called sciocco [unsalted] breat and the famous local olive oil. Homemade pasta is another must.
