Sorrento Hotels, Sorrento City Breaks and Sorrento Flights:
This small city has a superb location on its own peninsular jutting out into the Bay of Naples, with wonderful views across the water to Mount Vesuvius and Naples itself. This, coupled with proximity to the historic remains of Pompeii and Herculaneum, makes Sorrento a popular tourist base. There are ferries from the harbour to Amalfi, Capri, Ischia, Naples and Positano, whilst the famous Amalfi Drive connects Sorrento and Amalfi via a spectacular cliff-top road.
Sorrento was settled long before Roman times, and the modern town largely follows the layout of the old. There are many ruins and traces of former occupation in surrounding areas, including old tunnels down to the sea and the reservoir that served the underground aqueduct network. Some of the more interesting sites cannot be visited, but only seen from above.
A strong defensive location made the city hard to capture, but it still underwent various ups and downs – including a sacking by Muslim pirates in 1558 and an outbreak of the Black Death in 1656. but it remained an important centre of the southern Campania region, based on trade and agriculture, developing rapidly in the 19th century with the advent of genteel tourism, an activity that has since become the mainstay of the city’s economy.
In that context, the city’s strengths are twofold. It is well organised to serve the needs of visitors who merely wish to relax, with a charming harbour area [no beach!], pedestrianised streets, tempting shops, numerous cafes and a variety of restaurants.
Sorrento also serves as an ideal base for exploration of the surrounding area with its wonderful coastal scenery and historical attractions. There are many organised tours on offer, some rather expensive, but for those who like to set their own agenda, public transport is excellent…and affordable.
