Turin Breaks, Turin Hotels and Turin Flights:

Approaching this major industrial city on the River Po through endless dreary suburbs, it’s hard to imagine what lies ahead – a pleasing if slightly grubby centre with gracious Baroque streets, wonderful churches, opulent palaces and extraordinary collections of antiquities and art. Many of the finest buildings date from the 15th century, when Turin belonged to the Duchy of Savoy, becoming its capital in 1563 and, briefly, the capital of unified Italy in 1861.

When the Italian capital moved on, Turin industrialized, rapidly becoming the country’s major manufacturing centre. The hectic energy that swirls around is expressed in suicidal traffic – much of it consisting of Turin-made Fiats. Efforts are being made to smarten up the city and improve traffic flow, with infrastructure and redevelopment projects everywhere.

The city centre is laid out in an easy-to-follow grid plan. The Via Roma is the grand main street, lined with expensive shops and cafes. It gives access to some of the best squares, like the splendid oval Piazza San Carlo and Piazza Castello, with its imposing royal palaces. The only early monuments to have survived are palaces and churches, as Turin was extensively rebuilt in the early 1700s.

The Residences of the Royal House of Savoy [here and in nearby towns] are collectively a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Turin’s include the 17th century Palazzo Reale and castle-like Palazzo Madama. Other noteworthy monuments include the Renaissance Cathedral [Duomo], still impressive despite ongoing restoration following a fire, and Turin’s most elaborate church, Santuario della Consolata, with an ancient stature of the Madonna to be seen in the crypt. And no visit to Turin would be complete without a visit to the National Museum in Palazzo Carignano, if only for memories of local boy Garibaldi, the long-haired revolutionary who unified Italy.

Location of Turin:

In northwest Italy, at the heart of the Piemonte region. 350 miles northwest of the capital, Rome. 100 miles southwest of Milan. 100 miles north of San Remo on the Mediterranean coast. 35 miles east of Piemontese ski resorts and the French border. 10 miles south of Caselle airport.

Shopping in Turin:
An impressive selection from top fashion boutiques to traditional delicatessens. Leather goods, foodstuffs and household items are typically good quality; shoes, chocolates and cheese are favourite buys. Many designer outlets are located among the arcades of Via Roma and adjacent Via Lagrange. Via Garibaldi, the city's longest pedestrianised street, offers a broader selection of shops, and specialist traders cluster around the historical centre. Numerous markets, including Piazza della Repubblica and Porta Palazzo - reputedly Europe's largest open-air market.

Eating out in Turin:
Plenty of variety suiting all budgets, with numerous cafes, a handful of fast-food eateries, top-quality restaurants and traditional trattorias offering good-value pizzas and pasta dishes. Meats, cheeses and wild mushrooms form the basis of an acclaimed cuisine with strong French influences. Confectioners offer delicious pastries and chocolates; Italian ice cream needs little introduction.
