Huddled on a tight shelf above the sea and below some mighty cliffs is the charming 17th century village of Agulo.
Just 3km from
Hermigua on the northern shore of
La Gomera, this village has one of the best coastal settings on the island. From the main road above the village you can enjoy lovely views over banana plantations, centuries-old agricultural terraces and the tight-clustered village itself. You can also see in the distance
Tenerife's Mount Teide which provides a dramatic backdrop to Agulo.
A holiday to Agulo will have a medieval air about it as Agulo holds a maze of cobbled alleys and whitewashed houses making it well worth a visit. All the streets converge on the Iglesia de San Marcos [St Mark's Church], a curious little grey-white church built in 1939 and topped with 4 bright Moorish domes. If you arrive on your Agulo holiday by car, it is better to park on the main road rather than try to negotiate the narrow streets!
Agulo lies some 25km northwest of
San Sebastian and provides a pleasant stop-off if you are travelling across the island. Buses on the San Sebastian to
Vallehermoso route call in at Agulo.
A couple of km west of Agulo lies the hamlet of Las Rosas at the edge of which lies a large restaurant much frequented by tour buses. Most are drawn here by the reasonable food, fine views and various displays of local music and dancing. Occasionally demonstrations of La Gomera's famous
el silbo are also laid on for visitors on their La Gomera holidays. If you are in Agulo from 13-29 June Los Piques is celebrated. This festival incudes quarrels in el siblo.
Important flight information for Agulo Holidays:You will need to fly to Tenerife Sur - TFS and then by boat to La Gomera.
