HERMIGUA HOLIDAY GUIDE
La Gomera, Canary Islands, Spain

If you are planning a holiday to Hermigua, La Gomera, the following information may help by giving you an overview on the resort and the surrounding area.

Scattered the length of a pretty ravine, and fed by water from the only stream in La Gomera, the small town of Hermigua is in the island's lushest valley. The presence of a relatively plentiful supply of water here has encouraged banana cultivation for over a century.

The town broadly divides into an upper and lower village. The upper, Valle Alto, is marked by the 16th century Iglesia de Santo Domingo [which is rarely open] beside a convent of the same name. This is known for its striking Moorish-style wooden ceiling and the image of the local patroness, Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, the work of the 19th century Spanish sculptor, Fernando Estévez. The lower village, Valle Bajo, has at its centre a small plaza beside the modern Nuestra Señora de la Emancipación chuch. Another collection of buildings is further down the valley by the large pebble beach, but huge Atlantic waves and strong undercurrents mean that the only spot to swim here is the large seawater pool.

Peaceful Hermigua is the largest settlement on La Gomera after San Sebastian which is 20km away and offers far more to distract visitors on their Hermigua holidays. One of the main points of interest is the Los Telares craft centre which is an exhibition-shop spread across several rooms and devoted to the region's spinning and weaving traditions. Women can be seen making rugs and fabrics from ancient hand-looms and most of their work is available to purchase. Other crafts include local pottery and basket work fashioned from banana leaves - making ideal souvenirs of your holiday to Hermigua.
