Despite being one of the oldest and most important towns on the island, a holiday to Tias doesn't often feature very prominently in many tourist guides. Yet this busy town, overlooking the main resort of Puerto del Carmen, [just 5km or 3 miles inland from Puerto del Carmen] is home to a Nobel prize winner as well as a growing number of ex-pats. It also boasts a growing reputation as a destination in its own right, and has become the second largest settlement on the island after Arrecife

The settlement here dates back to at least 1493 when it was first featured in a census carried out by Alfonso Fajardo [the Governor of Gran Canaria], who decided to name the town after his two favourite aunts [or in Spanish tias].

Today, Tias accounts for some 70% of all tourist activity [and revenue] on Lanzarote, making Tias arguably the most important and [in theory] the most affluent town on the whole island. Tias is an important cultural centre on the island, with the local Municipal Theatre playing host on a regular basis, to a wide array of attractions, from traditional folklore events through to modern jazz concerts.

There is a good selection of local bars and restaurants to choose from on your Tias holiday, and June is an excellent time to visit Tias as fiestas flare throughout the month, kicking off with the festival of San Antonio from the 1st to the 13th and culminating in the atmospheric island wide Festival of San Juan, where bonfires send out plumes of smoke across the island.

Tias Holidays - What to do in Tias:
Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria :
There is little to interest people of their holidays to Tias, apart from the parish church of Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria which has a curious double belfry. The church is in the centre of the fiesta activities that take place in Tias every February.

Playa Quemada :
Pronounced "kermada", this one of Lanzarote's virtually undiscovered areas and is just 4km from Tias. Due to its position, Playa Quemada remains a small and simple traditional fishing village of attractive low, white houses. Lying in a calm and sheltered sunny bay protected from strong winds, its seafront is a beach of dark volcanic rock and stones with fishermen's boats being moored. You may think that this is a poor comparison with the pale sandy beaches of the other resorts. However it shelves gently into the calm waters and is ideal for swimming.
