In its early history, Las Vegas was a stopping off point for pioneer trails [the name means ‘the meadows’ and a staging post for the region’s mines, and was at one point the site of a Mormon Mission. Those days are long gone, and for the last 60 years and more the emphasis here has been on entertainment, gambling and other related activities. Its fortunes have waxed and waned over the years, but it is now the heart of the US gaming industry.
It is also known as the playground of the Brat Pack, where Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jnr and Frank Sinatra appeared to live hedonistic lifestyles that others could only dream of [or condemn]. Now its casino hotels are still the venue for long-term residence by such artists as Barry Manilow, Tom Jones, Elton John and Celine Dion.
Among the iconic buildings on the strip – Las Vegas Boulevard South – are Caesars Palace, the Mirage, the Excalibur – inspired by a medieval castle – the black glass pyramid of the Luxor, the MGM Grand, the Venetian and the Bellagio. In Las Vegas proper, the casinos include the Golden Nugget and the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino.
For those who don’t want to spend their days in the casinos, the wealth here means that the shopping malls house almost every designer label on the planet and the food is of a quality to match.
While the opulence and decadence may not be to everyone’s taste, Las Vegas is an experience not to be missed.

Shopping in Las Vegas:Available on a grand scale. Most of the bigger hotels have their own shopping arcades, from the exclusive to the more mundane. Fashion Show Mall towards the north of the Strip has big-name, high-end department stores, such as Bloomingdales. Factory outlets on the city's outskirts offer cut-price designer clothes and discounted name brands. Cheap souvenir and T-shirt shops abound on the Strip and in Downtown.
Eating out in Las Vegas:A huge choice of snack bars and restaurants in any of the hotels. Many of the bigger hotels have opened "celebrity-chef-endorsed" gourmet restaurants. Great value and button-popping portions as is the American way. Plenty of steakhouses and the ubiquitous buffet – be prepared to queue.
