Liverpool City Breaks, Holidays and Weekend Breaks:

The northern city is experiencing the sort of renaissance to be expected of a European Capital of Culture for 2008. Like so many British cities Liverpool’s dependence on traditional industries that decline sharply from the 1970s led to economic decay and social problems. However that has now been reserved and Liverpool is experiencing rapid regeneration. Happily one thing never changes, and that’s the legendary Liverpudlians - Scousers with sharp humour, irreverent attitudes and general disregard for authority, making this a lively place to be.

Liverpool is full of reminders of its maritime heritage, and the wealth generated thereby. The docks became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, and are fast becoming a centrepiece of city life. To show what can be achieved, Albert Dock’s warehouses have been converted into shops, apartments, restaurants and bars, with accompanying attractions like the Beatles Story and Merseyside Maritime Museum.

In fact Liverpool has more national Museums and galleries than any other English city except London. The Walker Gallery has a great collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings. Sudley House is a Victorian Mansion housing the collection of ship owner George Holt. The comprehensive World Museum is worth a day in itself. Tate Liverpool has a wonderful modern collection. The city’s strong musical tradition is sustained by regular performances of both classical and popular music.

Some of Liverpool’s Georgian architecture rivals that to be found anywhere (it has more Georgian houses than Bath), and there are more listed buildings than any other city in Britain, again with the exception of London. There is an abundance of public sculptures and Impressive civic and commercial buildings, plus some splendid modern architecture like the Atlantic Tower Hotel, designed to resemble a ship’s prow. Liverpool is rediscovering itself, and the experience is worth sharing.
