London City Breaks and Holidays:

The United Kingdom’s capital is one of the World’s largest cities – a place redolent with history. London is a renowned global centre of business, finance and culture, with huge influence over international affairs.

It is also a major tourist destination, with four UNESCO World Heritage Sites [the Tower of London, Maritime Greenwich, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and Westminster Abbey/Palace with St Margaret’s church]. In addition, it has numerous iconic sights such as Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye [ride it!], Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square, St Paul’s Cathedral, Marble Arch and Piccadilly Circus. There are a host of significant civic buildings, wonderful churches and magnificent Georgian and Victorian architecture.

The city was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1666 that began in Pudding Lane, so few earlier buildings remain. Extensive bomb damage was sustained on World War II, and piecemeal post-war development has resulted in mixed architectural styles that give London its special character. The original city of London, the financial district, is home to striking modern buildings, as is the Isle of Dogs beyond – formerly derelict dockland that now rivals the Old City. Further east, massive regeneration was triggered by the award of the 2012 Olympic Games.

World-class cultural facilities include the British Museum, Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Tate Britain and Tate Modern. London is also the country’s entertainment capital, with numerous theatres and concert halls. It’s a retail therapist’s paradise, too, as the West End [including Oxford Street and Regent Street] vies with classy Knightsbridge to offer the ultimate shopping experience. With an endless choice of places to sleep, eat, drink and be merry only one question needs answering – “how much time can you spare?”.

Shopping in London:
Oxford Street and Regent Street are the place for department stores and greatest choice. Kensington High Street and trendy Kings Road are more upmarket, with a preponderance of boutiques. Harrods is in even more classy Knightsbridge; Fortnum & Mason and Simpson in Piccadilly are in top-of-the-range Mayfair. Tottenham Court Road has many shops selling electrical goods; New Bond Street and areas of Piccadilly display some of the most expensive London antique and fine-art shops. Islington is also renowned for antiques. Choice of markets includes Covent Garden (hand-crafted jewellery, pottery, silverware, furnishings and clothes), Petticoat Lane (clothes) and Camden Lock (clothes, hand-crafted hats, jewellery, pottery, antiques and bric-a-brac - all among streetside and canalside cafes).

Eating our in London:
An enormously wide range of international cuisine from Ethiopian to South American, Eastern European to Malaysian, to suit all tastes and pockets. Many restaurants have acclaimed or award-winning chefs – with prices to match. Cheaper places can be found around Soho (although this area "gentrified" quite a bit in the 1990s), while the more expensive are in Piccadilly, Knightsbridge and Kensington. Within Soho is the Chinatown enclave with restaurants nearly continuous in Gerrard Street and those adjoining. Covent Garden has mainly French, Italian and British cafes and restaurants, often crowded and lively. Plethora of sandwich bars and fast-food outlets; increasing number of cafes with fine-weather streetside terraces for coffee and people-watching.
