IBTAM Handicrafts Institute is the body that oversees standards in the Madeira’s embroidery industry, and the small museum on the first floor of its headquarters building is a showcase for Madeiran handicrafts.
On display are vibrant traditional costumes, including scarlet and yellow skirts, waistcoats and scarves. Also on display are intricately embroidered tablecloths and bedspreads.
Displayed on the staircase leading up to the museum is an impressive tapestry depicting a flower-filled Madeiran landscape, made in 1958-61 and comprising some 7 million stitches.
