Fortaleza de São Tiago - Attracted by stories of Madeira’s massive sugar-derived wealth, French, English, Algerian and Turkish pirates regularly attacked Funchal from the 16th century, looting churches and wine cellars and killing anyone who stood in their way.
In response, Madeira’s governor ordered the construction of massive walls and fortifications which were extended and reinforced over a 100-year period. Built in 1614, the Fortress of St.James was one of the last fortifications to be completed. It is also the only fort fully open to the public, since the others are still being used by the Portuguese military.
Newly restored, the building now houses a museum of contemporary art, but the real interest of the fortress is the maze of passages, staircases and towers which make a perfect playground for children and the views over the rooftops of Funchal are wonderful.
