Holidays in Cala d'Or offer something different to many of the other resorts in Mallorca. Cala d’Or is a chic and smart
cala “bay” on the east coast. A former fishing harbour it has been turned into a marina and people come here to sail and dive and to sit at the waterfront bars. The villas are white and flat-roofed, in Ibizan style, designed in the 1930s by Pep Costa Ferrer, and the effect is surprisingly attractive.
Today, Cala d’Or is a collective name for a string of resorts, beaches and coves; they include Porto Petro, around a horseshoe bay 2km to the south, and Cala Mondrago, a further 4km south, where a pair of sandy beaches form part of the Mondrago nature reserve. The largest of the coves is called Cala Llonga, which has been developed into a large marina that effectively divides the resort into two.
Cala d’Or, itself, is a pine fringed cove with a small but often crowded beach. Sun loungers, parasols and pedaloes can be hired here. If you wish to see somewhere different on your Cala d'Or holidays - take the short trip to Es Trenc. This beautiful beach of clear blue water and golden sand, backed by pine trees and dunes, stretches for almost 5km along the coast. There is a small bar-restaurant here and you can hire parasols - but there are few other facilities here.
