Deya - or Deia - is an idyllic village of green-shuttered, ochre-coloured houses and has become a millionaires’ hideaway in Teix mountain.
Deya could have been just another pretty Mallorcan village had Robert Graves not decided to make it his home. The English poet and novelist first moved here in 1932 with his mistress Laura Riding and returned in 1946 with his second wife. Friends came to say and before long Deya had established a reputation as a foreign artists’ colony.
Now, it is on every tourist itinerary as the prime example of “the other Mallorca” and this small village contains two luxury hotels and is home to some rich foreign residents - such as Michael Douglas.
Climb the Carrer es Puig, Deya’s only main street, to the small cemetery where Graves is buried. His tombstone is inscribed in simple handwriting set into the drying concrete. His house [Ca’n Alluny] has been acquired by the government and turned into a museum. From Deya, you can go down to Cala de Deya, a small shingle beach set in an attractive cove. Here you will find an excellent rustic fish restaurant overlooking the bay.
It is hard to fault Deya as far as the picturesque is concerned. It is very pretty, and fabulously positioned on high ground surrounded by extensive olive groves.
