Estellencs Holiday Guide
Mallorca - Balearic Islands - Spain

Estellencs is a small and charming village of old stone houses, an interesting mostly 18th century church together with a handful of souvenir shops, and is situated in a sea facing valley amongst the western part of the Tramuntana mountain range in Mallorca, approximtely 30km northwest of the capital, Palma de Mallorca and the airport. Estellencs is located between Andratx and Banyalbufar, 1km from Cala Estellencs, the nearest cove with crystal-clear waters. The pretty village of Estellencs, with a population of around 380, is a popular base for walkers and cyclists - especially the walk to Puig Galatzó Mountain (1026 metres high), from where there are spectacular views of most of Tramuntana's Mountains and Palma's Bay. A 1.5km road winds down through terraces of palm trees, citrus orchards, olives, almonds, cacti, pines and various flowers to the local beach - Cala Estellencs.

Cala Estellencs is a small fishing port where boats are kept out of the sea to protect them against storms, either on the coast of in the "escars" (traditional contructions used by fishermen to keep their boats and fishing tackle). The shore and sea bed are rocky and as the sea is very transparent it makes it an ideal place for snorkelling. The beach of Cala Estellencs is 80 metres long and 10 metres wide.

The greater part of olive groves in Mallorca were planted in the 16th century. The dry, chalky soils in the Serra de Tramuntana in the north-west of the island are particularly suitable for cultivation. This why most of the 14,000 hectares of olive groves in the Balearics are found around Selva, Estellencs, Valldemossa, Fornalutx and Esporles.

Although Estellencs is considered to be small, it does have a superb selection of restaurants and bars in the higher part of the village, including Restaurant Maristel, Restaurant Montimar and Restaurant Son Llarg.

Restaurant Montimar is located on the main street near to the church and bristles with Mallorcan favourites like suckling pig and rabbit [try the intriguing rabbit, ham and fig pate], fri mallorquin [sweetmeats with aubergine and peppers], but chef-owner Guillermo Femenias Estelrich is also famed for his lamb, tumbet and home-made desserts. The restaurant is open Tuesday to Sunday 12:00-15:30 and 19:00-22:30.

Son Llarg is also to be found on the square and is located next to the Montimar and is one of the prettiest eateries in the area. Housed in a beautiful old stone building by the church, with a terrace above the road and views to the sea from some tables. It specialises in traditional island fish and meat dishes. Interestingly, the restaurant doubles as a gallery for island artists and stages live music concerts. You will find a slightly larger Mallorcan menu here and it is open daily [except Tuesdays] from 12:00-15:30 and 19:00-22:30.

Down in Cala Estellencs, the Bar Sa Puntetais a popular retreat for a simple lunch, as is the Bar Sa Tancain the lower part of the village.

To ascent Puig Galatzo, a walking trail starts near the KM97 milestone on the Ma10 road, about 2.5km west of Estellencs. It's not easy going so you will need good maps and plenty of water and food. It will take approximately 5-6 hours to make the round trip.

If you are in Estellencs around the 3rd weekend in April, you will usually be able to see the arts and crafts fair held here.

Serra de Tramuntana
Mallorca's northwest coast is dominated by the rugged Serra de Tramuntana and is a complete contrast to the coastal tourism found elsewhere on your holiday to Mallorca. The highest peaks are concentrated in the central mountain range. The highest, Puig Major [1445m] is off limites and home to a military communications base. It is followed by Puig de Massanella [1365m]. The main road [the Ma10] starts at Andratx and runs parallel to the coast to Pollensa. Its a stunning scenic drive and a popular cyclist route, especially during the sprint when the muted colours of the mountains are splashed with the bright colours of spring flowers. You will find plenty of miradors - viewing points - along the way and you will be tempted to take many of the diversions down to tiny bays for the quick dip.
