Founded by the British during their second occupation, and originally named Georgetown after George III, Es Castell retains the feel of a British colonial town. The Spanish renamed it Villacarlos after their own king; locals call it Es Castell because of its proximity to Fort Sant Filip. The Plaza de Esplanada is the former British parade ground, lined with solid Georgian buildings with sash windows and fanlights. Opposite the plum-red town hall, with its British clock tower, is the Miltary Museum , based in the old Cala Corb barracks. It has a collection of flats, fund sna maps as well as model reconstructions of Fort San Felip and some fine 18th century English furniture.
Es Castell is the most easterly town in Spain and thus the first to get the morning sun. Cales Fonts, a short walk from the main square, is an attractive sheltered harbour where you can dine at one of the many waterfront restaurants or pick up a boat tour of the Port of
Mahon.
Es Castell is a small, relaxing village with two inlents to the Port of Mahon - Calas Fons is popular with a wide choice of restaurants built into the rock - Cala Corb where Menorcans sing their traditional songs and where you will find the famous drag shown in the Bar Salon, just off the main square. There are no beaches in Es Castell but there is a small sandy beach at nearby Cala Pedera.
There is a variety of restaurants serving traditional, international and local cuisine in the centre of Es Castell and the port. There are also shops along the high street and the market in the square [held on Mondays and Wedensdays]. Evening shopping is possible in Calas Fons where you will find Menorcan clothing, pearls and locally designed jewellery.
