The Netherlands - situated at the mouth of the River Rhine - is one of the world's most liberal countries with a history of cultural and racial tolerance. The shape of the Netherlands has changed over the last 2000 years with maps once showing nearly half the country under water. However, since then areas have been reclaimed from the sea and the present shoreline is maintained by a drainage system of dykes, canals and windmills.
It is the third most densely populated country in Europe after Monaco and Malta. The three largest citieis - Amsterdam, Rotterdam and the Hague are all located in the west of the country, known as the Randstad.
Although the government of the Netherlands is based at the Hague, Amsterdam is the capital. It is Amsterdam where the main cultural attractions can be found. The folklore villages of Marken and Volendam are just a short drive away as well as the towns of Alkmaar [famous for its traditional cheese market] and Haarlem [famous for its bulb fields] and Utrecht [famous for its medieval churches]. The port of Rotterdam, Delft [the pottery centre] and the university town of Leiden lie to the south and west.
The Nethlands is known as a very easy country to travel around and it is a bit of a cultural shock when visiting Amsterdam where you will find a relatively car-free city where trams, bicycles and pedestrians take priority over cars. Outside Amsterdam, the transport system of the Netherlands is one of the most highly developed in Europe.
Eating out in the Netherlands:Although the Netherlands does not have the same gastronomic reputation as other European countries, food is good and reasonably priced. As well as Dutch restaurants, there are plenty of other restaurants serving international cuisine with Amsterdam in particular boasting a huge number of ethnic restaurants.
Shopping in the Netherlands:The Netherlands is famous for its cheeses, beers and flowers which are available at specialist sotres and supermarkets. Visit Amsterdam to find a selection of foreign and ethnic goods [including Indonesian beads to designer wear from France]. The famous brown cafes and coffee shops are an important part of the Dutch social scene and visitors to the Netherlands should not miss visiting one.
The Language of the Netherlands:Dutch, or Netherlandic, is the language of the Netherlands. Many of the smaller dialects are disappearing and a standardised version of Dutch is usually spoken.
